Exploring, Expanding our Lives
DISCUSSION -- Wilderness - a Spiritual Necessity
We were so excited to have Douglas Wood return as discussion leader this year, taking us on an exploration of our relationship to the natural world through story and song. Doug is a wilderness guide, an artist, environmental educator, and musician, as well as the best-selling author of many books for both children and adults. Doug was heavily influenced by his friendship with Sigurd Olson, one of the most important nature writers of the 20th century and a hugely influential figure in the preservation of wilderness areas in North America, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Doug shared more about Sig, his life's work, and philosophy, and helped us deepen our own relationship with the natural world. Doug's exploration of the natural world was poignantly illustrated when the Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis - appeared in the night sky. Lovely!
SINGING
June Fettig is a gifted choral leader who returned to lead us in song each morning after breakfast. There was plenty of fun and laughter, as well as inspiration and appreciation of the music from many countries and genres. We had opportunities to gather around the piano for 4-part harmony. We were all humming our favorites as we journeyed home!
DANCING
We welcomed Dave Leussler to Northland to lead Folk Dancing this year. Dave has been dancing most of his life (his father, Donn, led folk dancing at Northland for many years!). Dave has taught dance at Tapestry Folk Dance Center in Minneapolis, at social events at his church, and at the Danebod folk school Family camp in Minneapolis. New this year, Dave had us folk dancing with live music! So much fun for both dancers and musicians!
